Cute + Quirky toys #2 - Hello Kitty

Thursday 20 April 2017

I'm a big lover of Retro toys as well as toys that are quite simply just a bit different. After receiving a few questions about where items from Lily's room were from I've decided to start a long running series on my blog about the different toys and collectables Lily has in her room.

I wrote last week about my love for collectables and this week I'm talking about something a liiittle more retro. Some of the most long running and most popular collectables around are of course Hello Kittys. Having begun in Japan in the 1970s the Hello Kitty brand has grown to incredible heights and are still continuing to do so today.

The amount of Hello Kitty related items out there is insane.
Not just the little figures themselves but clothes, bags, bedspreads and all sorts of home decor (in fact I've had my eye on this particular lamp for a while now)

Lily's a big fan.

I can't actually remember when her love for them first started but it's been a while. I think possibly she started watching Hello Kitty lucky dip reveals on YouTube and it went from there. She got a Hello Kitty plane and pilot figurine for her birthday and played with it so much that I went on the hunt for some more for her.

Of course Hello Kitty can be incredibly expensive, being the established worldwide brand that it is. But scouring the internet showed me that there are a lot of individual sellers (tip: always look for individual sellers over companies for things like this if you are looking to keep costs down) that are willing to sell on their Hello Kitty collections for considerably less of an amount. In fact I think I managed to get a sandwich bag of about 20 figures for a fiver on Ebay once. Places like Gumtree, and sometimes Amazon, are good places to search too.

What is it that I like the most about Hello Kitty? I like that they all have their own little character. Of all the Hello Kitty figures Lily has, no two are the same and I think she likes that too. And how cute are the teeny mini ones posted in the first photo! Their differences keeps it exciting when collecting them, and of course there are so many hundreds and thousands to collect that the collecting game wont be over before it's begun.

What do you think of Hello Kitty's? Are you a fan?
