Transitioning from Cot to Bed

Saturday 5 September 2015

About two weeks ago we decided to take the sides down on Lily's cot and turn it into a 'big girls bed.' She's nearly three and I'm not quite sure why we put it off for so long, I think just because she's been sleeping so well that we saw no reason to rock the boat. However I'm so glad we finally did because she absolutely loves it and it hasn't really affected her sleeping at all.

I was worried that without the sides up Lily might get out of bed several times a night, try and go downstairs or come into us. Luckily we have a safety gate up at the top of the stairs so she wouldnt actually be able to make it down but we needn't have worried anyway as she's been without the sides for two weeks now and hasn't got out of bed once.

One issue we have encountered is that the bunny she sleeps with keeps falling onto the floor in the night and she'll then wake up and cry because she cant find him. For the last few days I've stuffed a cushion down the side of her bed though and bunny has managed to stay in his rightful place! Lily also is going through a stage of waking up really early (about 5.30) and shouting 'it's morning time mummy!' and I cant cope with being up that early haha. When she was in her cot I'd just leave her until she became disgruntled, knowing that she couldn't escape, but now when I hear her waking up I feel like I have to go straight into her otherwise she'll just get out of bed and come to us anyway. I'm hoping this problem will remedy itself when we get into the autumn/winter days and it stays darker in the mornings for longer. We'll have to see.

Overall I'm really pleased with how the transition has gone. We took these photos of when she first realised she had a big girls bed (we didn't tell her we were changing it over) and she was so happy and excited, she spent days after proudly telling everyone that she was a big girl now! I always like the way it makes her room look, much more of an actual bedroom than a nursery, and she seems to play in it a lot more now too.
