Our Struggle With Choosing A Baby Name

Sunday 29 November 2015

Choosing a baby name can be really stressful for any couple as it's such an important decision and to be honest I'm finding it so much harder this time around. We were very lucky that with my last pregnancy we had Lily's name picked from the very start and it always felt right - there was just never any question that Lily wouldn't be her name. So this time around not to have that perfect name come to us like Lily's did has been difficult.

I don't know if it's because we don't know the gender this time and therefore have to broaden our name search to names of both genders but I'm yet to come across even one name that I feel is the right one for us. I've found plenty I like but none I love and I so want my child to have a name that I feel confident in.

I don't have much of a criteria for names this time - just that I'd like a name that's less common that Lily's is. I love Lily's name and have never once regretted it but it does wind me up a bit just how many Lily's there are everywhere we go and that she'll probably be one of several Lily's in her class at school. This time round I'd like a name where I'm confident he or she will be the only one in their class with that name. However that's proving more difficult to come across than I first though and it doesn't help that James is drawn towards more traditional and well known names and anything he hasn't heard of he just dismisses straight away. Men!

Unless some sort of miracle happens I don't see us making a solid name decision any time soon so we have a plan to come up with a shortlist of names ready to come to the hospital with us - 5 boys and 5 girls names so that once the baby is here we can take a look at he or she and decide what suits them the best.
Totally different to how we went about naming Lily but everything about this pregnancy has been different so hey ho!

If anyone has any good name suggestions or knows of any good baby name resources please send them my way. At this point I feel like I've looked at every baby name book and website going, help is definitely much needed!

  1. I don't have any suggestions, I am a nightmare when it comes to choosing baby names. Thankfully we had a boys name picked and I'm expecting a boy this time around - if we'd had another girl we'd be screwed as there's only one other girls name I like and my husband hates it! x

  2. Our baby is due in January and I haven't picked a name yet. We keep saying ooh thats a nice name or no I don't like that, but we haven't even got a short list yet. #maternitymondays

  3. I wanted royal names so there was a smaller pool to choose from for both of mine but, if we have another, my husband doesn't like the boy name so I don't know what we will do. With our first, she was a different name for 5 minuts but didn't look like it. You will know when you see your baby I promise. also, think of personalised stuff, you don't want a child to never get his or her name on a ruler do you hehe :)

  4. It's so tricky isn't it? With Monkey we knew early on whereas with LM we had plenty of girls names but could not think of a boys name at all. We settled on a girl's name that we love but never did find another boys name we were happy with. Thank goodness she turned out to be a girl 😊 xx
