How we're doing with weaning - Blogmas Day 8

Thursday 8 December 2016

Ah weaning..such a messy messy experience! With weaning the second time around I have to say I've been way more relaxed. I remember when we weaned Lily I was terrified to give her anything that wasn't pureed to within an inch of its life for fear of her choking. She basically had jars and pouches for at least the first 6 months of weaning, possibly longer, and these days she's an incredibly fussy eater. I often wonder if a big part of it is down to me.

Archer has been weaned since 6 months and I have to say his eating experience so far has been completely different to Lily's.
Whilst Lily would never really eat much in one go we've found that Archer is the complete opposite and will eat and eat until the cows come home. I did tell myself that we'd refrain from buying those expensive Ella's kitchen pouches this time around but I have to be honest here and say we do still get them - mainly for convience sake as they're easy to take out and about. However for the most part he will just eat whatever it is that we're eating and it makes everything SO much easier.

His eating routine at the moment looks a bit like this..

Breakfast - Porridge made with hot water or expressed milk followed by a mid morning snack of toast. Both always get finished!
Lunch - This will usually be a platter of whatever we have in the house - Cheese, quorn, and veg usually. However if we are out and about he will quite often have a pre bought jar or pouch. He always finishes lunch and quite often has seconds.
Mid afternoon snack - Fruit
Tea - This will be whatever Lily is eating after nursery. His current favourites are pasta, fish and potatoes. However I'd say tea time is probably the time of day where he eats the least. Mainly because he's so tired and grumpy by this time of the day, a lot of food will get played with or thrown on the floor!

Combining all that with his milk feed (he usually feeds just before and just after both his naps and then just before bed) he's having quite a big intake of food and milk. I did worry that I was over feeding him at one point, especially because he's just so heavy compared to Lily at this age but as the health visitor pointed out, he's always been heavy - ever since the day he was born! She put my mind at rest by saying she had no concerns and so that I should just be happy about the fact that he's such a good little eater.

So appreciating my little chunk and his hearty appetite is exactly what I'm doing. Long may it last!
