It's the little things - Playing in the garden, at long last

Friday 17 March 2017

More often than not it's the little things that mean the most to us. That's why The little things linky run by Jodie over at Dear little Daisy and Lauren over at Dilan and Me is so great because it focuses on just that, the little things.

Yesterday was a prime example of something that will seem insignificant to many but actually meant so much.
It was actually the first time we had the french doors open and played out in the garden since last summer. A signifier right here in black and white, or a burst of colour should I say, that what has been the longest winter is finally finally at its end.

Spring is here.

I don't know why the sun being out has felt like such a big deal really. The natural change of season to season is one that often gets over looked by me. Usually time hurtles forward at such a pace that I blink and we're into the next season, and the next, and the next..
But not this time. This winter has been so full of sorrow that I've quite literally felt as though we would never see the back of it. Even when March arrived and we technically did enter spring time it just didn't feel so. The weather continued to be cold and rainy and generally stuck in winter and so has my mood.

But yesterday was a whole other tale. The sun was shining at last. Really shining. The kind that streams through the windows and lights up the walls. The sky a brilliant shade of blue, the breeze non existent and the daffodils making their way up through the earth once again. & on that day in particular I was really struck with just why I love where we live.

I feel like I'm talking about yesterday like it was a million years ago. But I think that because today is back to being grey and cold, it almost feels like that day was a dream y'know? A spring day that never existed. If not for the photographs.

Thinking back to the last time we played in our garden and it must have been around August. Archer will have been 6, maybe 7 months old, and barely crawling. The difference between now and then is kind of astounding. As soon as we got into the garden he was exploring every inch as though it was all brand new to him. & I guess in a way it is.

I hadn't intended to take any pictures actually. Just to enjoy having a cuppa outdoors with my little brother who was round at the time and to watch the kids play on the swing that's been neglected for the past half a year. But seeing Arch crawling around every corner of the garden, seeming so mesmerised by it all, I knew it was a moment I wanted to capture.

Isn't it funny how just having the opportunity to get the kids out in the garden can mean so much? It's a bit soft really but I did get a bit emotional as I sat on the bench in the sunshine and watched the kids play together.

This house may not be our forever home, but these four walls, and the garden especially will always hold such dear memories to me. And if this is going to be our last summer living here, I'm sure as hell going to make the most of it.

  1. I have really noticed the change in the seasons too. I guess it's because it seems to have been gloomy forever and so when the sun came out I could felt completely different, cheery and more energy. Hopefully we'll get more spring days sooner rather than later. #itsthelittlethinkgslinky

  3. I love your photos, and what a cutie in that hat. I know what you mean about spring days they really make the world seem a kinder, brighter place. And I equally agree how annoying it is when you wake up the next day to grey skies. Silly British weather 🙄
