That time we broke down on the motorway..*

Friday 16 February 2018

Car safety is a topic close to my heart. Mainly because for as long as I can remember I've had this complete and utter fear of me, and now me and the kids or James, being involved in a car crash. James works outside of Leeds for work which involves him travelling on the motorway daily and so I always make him ring me before he sets off so if he's home any later than planned I will know somethings up! (I really should watch less Motorway Cops, it doesn't help the fear haha)

I'm not sure many people can say they have a breaking down on the motorway story but I certainly do.
When I was about 19 me and my friends went to a party up in the Lake District only to breakdown on the motorway the next morning due to a clutch issue. We had to stand at the side of the motorway in our pyjamas (because none of us had bothered getting dressed that morning, so typical) in all our hungover glory for hours before the breakdown recovery came to rescue us.

It seemed kind of amusing at the time, and the many people who drove passed us and honked obviously thought so, and yes, it makes for a good tale to tell, but at the time we didn't really realise how dangerous breaking down on the motorway can be nor how lucky we actually were. Luckily where we broke down there was a hard shoulder so we could pull out of the live lane to the relative safety of the hard shoulder and then stand behind the crash barrier far away from the passing traffic whilst we awaited rescue.

It's worth bearing in mind that with the introduction of the new "Smart Motorways", we are losing the safety blanket of the hard shoulder which means the next time you grind to a halt it might be in the live lane of the motorway with vehicles hurtling towards you at 70mph.

This week I'm working with Ossett Tyre House to raise awareness of the importance of vehicle safety.

Regular servicing is a must for any car owner. Not only does regular servicing of your vehicle ensure that everything is working correctly, it reduces the chances of something catastrophic happening unexpectedly which could have been otherwise avoided. Even something as simple as checking the tread on your tyres and the tyre pressures themselves is a simple yet important task that any driver should be able to do. When did you last check yours?

Regular service intervals can feel like a burden and an unnecessary cost, especially when you don't feel like anything is wrong with your car. But they do much more than put things right; they can prevent things going wrong in the first place. Regular servicing will keep your car running smoothly, keep you and other road users safe, add value to your car when it's time for an upgrade and ultimately save you money in the long run!

Passing your MOT is of course important, not only to remain a legal driver on the roads, but for your own piece of mind to know that a qualified mechanic has inspected and tested your vehicle's safety to the highest standards. Ossett Tyre House provides online booking of MOTs in Wakefield.

Regular servicing seem like extra hassle I know, but it's hassle that's worth it that's for sure.
