Behind the Business with Artemis and Bess

Monday 23 September 2019

As a serial 'small shopper' I decided to start a new series focusing on different small businesses by chatting to the often over looked faces behind them. Not only is it lovely to learn more about the businesses that I purchase from regularly it's also a great way of recommending these exceptional small shops to the wider parenting blogger community.

This week I am chatting to Nicola from Artemis and Bess. Artemis and Bess is a gorgeous online shop selling timeless gender neutral dressing up pieces for children old and young, a shop I would most definitely recommend for those children with big imaginations!

Hi Nicola! Tell me a bit about yourself:

Hello! I’m Nicola and I am the owner of Artemis and Bess (both the business and the children!) I was born in SE London but left for Scotland when I was 18 and haven’t looked back. My home and heart is in Glasgow and that is where all our products are handmade and shipped from.

Tell us about Artemis and Bess:

Artemis and Bess is a small family run business inspired by our daughter's imagination. Bess has never really been one for Disney princesses, sparkles, fairies or tutus.  Instead, her imaginative play revolves around feasts for kings and queens, sorcerers mixing potions and knights slaying dragons and monsters. After designing pieces to fill her dressing up box we decided to do the same for like minded boys and girls all over the world.

How did you come up with the name?

Artemis and Bess are the names of our kids (although our son  is mainly Artie) so it was a no brainer really! It’s all for them. Running the business gives me so much flexibility to be there when needed and hopefully I can build it up and one day pass it down to them to either run or sell.

It’s going to be awkward if we have a third baby though haha.

Who or what inspires you?

Instagram is a massive source of inspiration for me. I know there is a lot of hate for the platform at the moment but I only follow accounts that inspire or empower me. Accounts such as yours, with visually stunning feeds of kids at play outside in nature, really inspire me when designing and making products.

Where can we find Artemis and Bess?

Thanks Nicola,  it was nice to hear a bit more about you. Here are some photos of Archer in our favourite A&B pieces - all currently available on the website.
