36 Week Update - Induction & Growth Scan

Monday 18 January 2016

Another crazy week and yet again I don't know where to start! I feel like every week gets more dramatic than the last at the moment, I suppose it's a good thing the end is in sight!

Probably the most exciting thing about this week is that I was finally given my induction date. I thought I might have been given a choice about when the induction would be or at least asked which dates might work best in terms of childcare etc but nope, it was all sorted without any input from me. Luckily the date they've given me which is Jan 29th works absolutely fine for us..infact if anything I have a good feeling about this date! Lily was born on the 29th Oct so the OCD in me quite likes the idea of my kids both having 29 birthdays! Although realistically knowing how long induction takes this baby will probably be born on the 30th, we'll have to see!

I'll be 38+1 on the 29th, exactly the same gestation I was when I went in for my induction with Lily and at the time of writing this the 29th is only 11 days from now which is complete madness. Not going to lie I feel pretty stressed about all the things I've got to do, I haven't even packed my hospital bag yet! But at the same time I'm relieved to finally have a date.

When I went in to the hospital on Thursday to get my induction date and have my OC bloods done they offered me a scan too which was a nice surprise as I wasn't expecting one. My bump has been measuring large for the whole pregnancy and this week it was measuring 40 weeks so 4 weeks ahead of what it should be so they thought it would be a good idea to give me a growth scan so they can check on the size of the baby.

The scan showed that I am indeed carrying a big baby, although not dangerously big, but it also showed that I have polyhydramnios which is excess fluid around the baby. Polyhydramnios can be caused by lots of things such as gestational diabetes, chromosomal issues, and a blockage within the baby or it can just be 'one of those things.' As I've already been tested for GD and my 20 week scan was fine the midwives said they are inclined to believe it's just one of those things but that they will do a small procedure once the baby is here to check there is no blockage in the throat or gut. Whilst all this is stressful and I'm a natural worrier I'm trying to put it out of my mind as much as I can. If there is an issue with baby we can cross that bridge when we come to it, there's no point dwelling on it now and if I'm honest my heart and my intuition is telling me everything will be fine so hopefully it will be.

Apart from the fluid issue, the scan itself was amazing. We got to see loads of the baby and the sonographer even printed off photos for us. The baby is already weighing 7lb 1oz at 36 weeks which is interesting because I remember Lily's growth scan at 38 weeks she was weighing an estimated 6lb 10..This baby is going to be a giant I swear! It's got to be a boy haha!

Symptoms this week have been pretty much the same as last week. I'm still emotional, although I think that's to be expected, still having migraines and my skin is annoyingly starting to break out - although I think that might be stress related more than pregnancy. Whilst my braxton hicks have mostly gone my sciatica is instead getting worse to the point where I can barely get around without having to stop and shriek in pain. I can almost feel the baby pressing on nerves and it's soo embarrasing when it happens in public but knowing that there's only 11 days left of it is helping me manage it a lot better than last week!

There's still so much left to do between now and the 29th but one thing we seem to have finally made a decision on is names. I did a post in November about the fact that me and James just couldn't agree on names this time around, which you can read here - Our struggle with choosing a baby name
However I think we've finally got there! We were thinking of taking in a short-list of names into the hospital and just deciding after seeing the baby but after sitting down and having a proper discussion about it I think we've come to an agreement and found a name we like for each gender. To be honest I don't think James was initially so keen on the first name for either gender, they definitely weren't his first choices, but I let him choose the middle names for both and he likes the names a lot more now he's seen them complete with the middle names.
We wont be revealing the name until he/she is here this time, that's a little lesson I learnt from Lily's pregnancy as everyone seems to have an opinion..especially my mother! But with less than 2 weeks to go I'm sure you can all manage to wait haha!

It's so strange to think that next weeks pregnancy update will be my last and little baby Baker will be here before we know it! Eek, both exciting and scary at the same time!

  1. Wow, exciting times! I can't imagine what it's like to know (roughly) when your baby is coming, but it must be better than weeks of wondering if you should make plans for the next day or not!! I hope the next 11 days go well for you, sounds like you're having a rough time but at least you now know the end is in sight. Oh and don't be so sure your big baby is a boy - my daughter was 9lb 13oz at birth, and I had a growth scan last week showing that her baby brother is currently tracking a lower centile than she was on - thank goodness!!
