Siblings in June

Thursday 15 June 2017

The past few weeks have been all about playing in the garden for these two. The warmer weather has meant we can have the patio doors open and I'm really enjoying being able to sit down with a cuppa and watch them play!

Strangely the most expensive items in the garden, the swing, play house and water tray aren't getting a look in and instead both Lily & Archer having been enjoying the cheap plastic tunnels and tents I purchased a few years back and have lived in the shed ever since until recently! Now that it's summer and we're spending most of our time outdoors I'm on the look out for some more garden toys, ideally ones that wont break the bank, so if you have any suggestions or links for me I'd love for you to leave them in the comments.

Despite all the lovely garden play though I'd say this month has been the hardest month in a while in terms of sibling bonding.

I'm not really sure why. Archers been in a foul mood recently which coincides with the jabs he had a few weeks back. He's back to being clingy, whiny, not sleeping and having constant meltdowns. It could just be coincidence, or it could be several things such as teeth or going through a leap but his mood did seem to change as soon as he had the jabs. I've found myself wishing several thousand times over the past few days that he could just tell me what's up!

As Arch is sleeping so badly at night these days he often keeps Lily up too and she's a lot less patient with him the next day. She often wakes in the night when he does and asks me to 'make Archer keep the noise down' and grumbles in the morning about the little sleep she's had. The thing about Lily is that she's an absolute angel but when she's over tired it's like she's had a personality transplant and so I have two full time grumps on my hand lately.

Since Archer is in full time clingy mode too he's back to smacking and pushing Lily if she tries to give me a cuddle or sit on my lap, a stage I thought we were over, and consequently things that wouldn't bother her so much such as Arch trying to muscle in on her games are now driving her up the bend. It's hard as a parent because I understand her frustrations with Archer, especially as I'm feeling those frustrations too, but I also have to play devils advocate and make sure she's learning to share and understand that her brother is only little, and he's still learning too.

I don't want to make this post all doom and gloom though. Yes we are going through a hard patch at the moment but we have had plenty gorgeous moments in-between the tough ones too as you'll see from the photos below.

Archer is still in the role of copying everything Lily does and in return Lily is loving the teacher role. This month she's taught him how to get down the slide by himself, which is a blessing for me because I don't have to keep running over to put him down it every two minutes now. Result!

So much garden play!

This month Archer is loving:

  • Screeching!
  • Sitting in tents
  • Going up and down the slide
  • Porridge
  • His soft toy 'Patchy'
  • Drawing on floors/furniture/anything that isn't paper
  • Copying words & sounds
  • Waking the household up at night!

This month Lily is loving:

  • Fort Boyard & Scooby Doo
  • Playing schools
  • Writing people's names
  • Finding caterpillars for pets
  • Pretending to be a detective
  • Jam on toast

  3. Highs and lows with siblings isn't it. One minute my two couldn't love each other more and are constantly cuddling. The next, they are squabbling because they don't want each other's cuddles!!! Kate x
